港町のそのヤーグヮー (小さな家) 、別名・幽霊屋敷には、いろんな男達が集まってくる。港湾で働く者、漁から帰ってきたばかりのウミンチュ (漁師) 、失業者、浮浪者…。ヌチャーシー (金を出し合う) をして酒を買ったり、あるいは金のある者がおごったりして、ひとときのやすらぎを求めて男達が集まってくる。まさに男だけの世界である。大声で「赤木圭一郎」を唄い、昔を懐かしみ、時には殴り合いのケンカをする。「いい年をしたおっさんが…」と、思う時もあるが、彼らには彼らにしか分からない、「男のキズナ」とやらがあるので、私はいつもただ黙ってながめている。一見、コワモテのおじさん達ではあるが、私は彼らの中に実に自分に正直に生きている素直さを感じて、なぜか心ひかれる。石川真生

この度photographersʼ galleryでは、企画展として石川真生展を開催する運びとなりました。photographersʼgalleryとKULA PHOTO GALLERYの2会場を使い、「港町エレジー」 (1983～86年撮影) を展示いたします。石川は1970年代から自身が生まれ育った沖縄をおもに撮影してきました。近年では、2011年のさがみはら写真賞を受賞した写真集、『FENCES, OKINAWA』 (未来社、2010年) や『日の丸を視る目』 (未来社、2011年) を出版するなど、さらに精力的に活動を続けています。

The ya-gua-, popularly known here as the “haunted house,” attracts all sorts of men. Dock workers, fishermen just back from fishing, the unemployed, and homeless. They come here to have some time at ease, pooling their cash to buy a bottle or enjoying the generosity of someone with money. This is completely a man’s world. They sing loudly the old ballads of Keiichiro Akagi, tell nostalgic stories of the old days, and sometimes even fall to fisticuffs. Sometimes they seem to me rather childish for their ages, but these are bonds of male friendship, so I just watched and kept my thoughts to myself. They put on the disguise of the tough guys, but their irresistible appeal is their frankness: they live honestly to themselves. Mao Ishikawa
